The International Survivors of Suicide Day

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention reports,” Every 14 minutes someone in the U.S. dies by suicide.  Every 15 minutes someone is left to make sense of it.”

Every year, too many people lose their lives to suicide, leaving behind family, friends, colleagues and others who struggle to make sense of their loss. Our Memphis and Mid-South community is no exception.  The Dennis H. Jones Living Well Network exists because Debbie Jones was willing to share her grief with others.  Her courage and honesty, combined with her generous donation to Methodist Healthcare, led to the creation of The Front Porch.

On Saturday, November 23rd, survivors of suicide in our community, across the United States, and around the world will come together seeking support and guidance from healing conferences in their communities. Our local event will be hosted by Memphis/Mid-South AFSP Chapter. Location and hours are below:

Germantown Church of Christ building

8723 Poplar Pike, Germantown, TN 38138

11:00 AM to 2:30 PM.

Admission is free, but you are encouraged to pre-register at t.howell4afspmemphis@yahoo.com

You can attend a local conference in your area or watch online at www.afsp.org .  Afterwards, there will be a live online chat with others who have lost someone to suicide. You’ll hear from other survivors about how they cope, and from experts sharing the most current information on suicide and grief.

If you have lost someone to suicide, these local and online gatherings were designed for you.

Since 2004, the Memphis/Mid-South Chapter of the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has welcomed survivors of suicide loss, providing a safe and healing space where everyone can comfortably participate in a way that is meaningful to them.  Each chapter is dedicated to providing resources to those who have been affected by suicide.  The organization seeks to promote awareness and to prevent suicide in our community through educational efforts.

We hope that you will be able to attend the Conference on November 23rd.   You might also consider the monthly meetings called Healing Hearts Suicide Grief Support Group. The meeting details are listed below:
